How to signup for Microsoft Azure

This guide will take you through the process of signing up for Microsoft Azure free trial that will give you access to Cognitive Services API.

If you already have a Microsoft Azure account you can use this however there may be a small cost to use some of the API services.

First visit Microsoft Azure signup page as show below:

Click on 'Start for Free'

Now sign in using your Microsoft account. If you haven't already got one you will need to create one.

Enter your details into the first screen as shown below:

Enter your phone number:

You will be sent a verification code to your phone to enter into the box provided.

Next you will be asked for a credit/debit card as shown below:

Your card will not be charged and will not unless you specifically upgrade to a regular account at the end of the free trial.

Once your account has been created you will be signed into the Azure dashboard:

Click into the 'Search resources, services and docs' box and enter 'computer vision':

Click on the 'MARKETPLACE' entry for the Computer Vision API and you will be presented with a window as shown below to create your API service:

  • Name - Enter the name of your service as it will appear on the Azure dashboard e.g. 'Computer Vision'.
  • Subscription - Select 'Free Trial'.
  • Location - Select 'West Central US'.
  • Pricing tier - Select free 'F0 (20 calls per minute, 5k Calls per month)
  • Resource group - Create a new group called e.g. 'Group1'.
  • Pin to dashboard - Tick to place an icon the dashboard for the service.

Once you have clicked 'Create' it will create the API service and after a few moments you will be directed to the screen as shown below:

Then click on 'Keys' in the section 'Grab your keys' and you will be redirected to the window as shown below:

Take a note of 'Key 1' as you will need this when creating your bot.

Now click into the 'Search resources, services and docs' box and enter 'bing spell':

Click on the 'MARKETPLACE' entry for the Bing Spell Check v7 API and you will be presented with a window as shown below to create your API service:

  • Name - Enter the name of your service as it will appear on the Azure dashboard e.g. 'BingSpell'.
  • Subscription - Select 'Free Trial'.
  • Pricing tier - Select 'S1 (100 calls per second)'.
  • Resource group - Select an existing group e.g. 'Group1'.
  • Confirm - Click the tick box to confirm you will allow Microsoft to use your data to improve the service.
  • Pin to dashboard - Tick to place an icon the dashboard for the service.

Once you have clicked 'Create' it will create the API service and after a few moments you will be directed to the screen as shown below:

Then click on 'Keys' in the section 'Grab your keys' and you will be redirected to the window as shown below:

Take a note of 'Key 1' as you will need this when creating your bot.


The two keys you created through the above process can now be used in the demo code supplied in our Online Code Editior. If you want to use any of the other Microsoft API calls you will need to go through a similar process of selecting and creating the services. When creating the service for some of the API calls be mindful of the location you select as you will need to tailor the URL when calling the API from your code.
